Ha. Yeah.. mines always locking at the wrong times. Luckily I have the keypad deal. That.. and I made it a habit of always hitting the unlock button when I get out of the X.

Hmm, on the front doors of my 2000, it unlocks the door as you open it.

The feature can be disabled if you'd like it better without it.

Mine just did this to me this morning. Luckily I too have the keypad to unlock it.

lol, I always put it in park, wait a few seconds and hit unlock 3 or 4 times before opening the door.. and if I'm worried that it may still lock, I leave the door open if its not going to take long. If I'm leaving my vehicle.. even for a minute, I turn it off.

I have only had this happen to me once, thankfully we have 3 keys to the truck and there was someone home I could contact with the key.

in a similar story... on 2 seperate occasions I have locked my keys in my belair.. on both occasions.. my cell phone.. has been in the car with my keys lol

what luck huh? the key idea is a good one, but i'd probablly leave the key on my person rather than on the truck.. you have a bad chance of it falling off or someone else finding it if you do.

Jefe: Mine unlocks the door also but i think the car may have moved a little when i jumped out and then...
There have been cases of car jacking here in Sweden too, so i think i'll keep it anyway, i don't want to see my X in the paper standing in a broken shopping mall window...

Darkfox: funny you mentioned the Cellphone, i had it on me, strange...

in my 94, the second day after I purchased it I was installing a CB... got in (leaving the door open of course), start up the car, make sure CB works it does, leave car running, exit vehicle shut door to clean up some tools. Boom. Keys locked in. Hadn't had a key made. Mr. Locksmith made $45.

good to know ford is keeping the locksmiths in business lol ;)

Thats weird. On my X if I unlock them while its running, I have to hit and release the brake pedal for them to lock again. If I just let it sit it doesn't lock.

That is how it is supposed to work. You also have to be out of park. The locks shouldn't lock when in park. If they do then either the lock button got pressed or the lock button got pressed back down. Not having the autolock wouldn't have done a thing to prevent this. Then again maybe the Swedish Explorer's autolock feature works differently than it does here in the U.S.

That's exactly that ways mine does too. You have to press and then release the brake pedal for the autolock to work, and I have a 2000 model. If your auto locks DONOT work like that, they are malfunctioning!

And yes, the outside door pad does come in handy IF that does happen. I lock my vehicle now that it is cold, and let it warm up. I use the keypad to unlock the vehicle.

I always keep a spare key on the vehicle. And I never worry about being locked out, because the key is always there. It's also very convenient for going to concerts and stuff like that, I don't have to worry about getting my keys stolen because I just lock them in the Ex and not worry about them.

Robert: Idont think it works any diffrent in Europe than in the US, But i was in a hurry and i just "dumped" the X..you know braked, opend the door, put it in Park, got out of the car in a matter of seconds, and it was in a upp hill place, so i guess i just paid for being in a hurry.. so then i could have had the foot on the brakes when i opend the door and when i got off the brakes the car moved an inch or so before the "PARK" lock stopped it, and thats when i closed the door...
I dont think its something wrong with my lockes it was just one of those moments when you pushed the limits of the steps for preventing to lock yourselfe out.

disable autolock

I think I remember seeing a procedure or something in my manual about disableing autlock anyone else see this.

When I am working on my vehicle or jumping out only for a minute with the keys in it, I leave a window down enough that I can get my arm in. If I accidently hit my electrics,at least I can get my arm in to open it. I've been there and done that!

Yes, you can disable the autolock system. The instructions for this in my owners manual and should be in yours, unless this was not an option for the 98 model year. Mine is a 2000 model.

If you can't find it, let me know and I will copy and paste the instructions for you.

Heh i just carry a spare key in my wallet... im a dunce and i havent been locked out yet! :D
