I have a 1993 explorer xlt 4x4 4.0L auto trans that i got with 120000 miles on it and i have had it for about five months and just recently when it is cold it wont shift. when i put it in drive it will go in what i assume is first gear then as i drive it over revs and i have to let off the gas and coast about a block then give it a little gas then it will finnaly shift after that it happens again with the next gear and it will be so bad that the engine over revs and the oil presure drops. this is a major problem and i need to know what to do. thank you for any help.

I have the same problem with my 91'S A4LD. Also if I shift it manually it will go from 1st to 2nd fine but then shift into drive and it goes back to first. I hope someone has an answer.

The same thing happens to mine if i shift manualy like yours it just takes a second i probably should have said that.

The 1>2 shift is determined by the speed governor located inside the tailstock of the transmission. the valve can be removed and polished. This can be fixed without removing the transmission. See "My A4LD rebuild diary" for a picture. Late cold shifting problems can also be caused by a vacuum modulator that is just starting to leak. Inside there is a small orifice that won't pass fluid quickly when it is cold.

Thanks Opera. I wil try that once I get my B&M Shift plus. It should be here monday

Vacuum controlled. The shift plus I got is for an A4LD

I ll try that and see what happens thanks for your input.
