My '92 auto tranny will jerk or buck when reapplying throttle at highway speeds at 1700 to 2k rpm. I thought at first the engine was missing, but now I'm thinking tranny.
It also seems to "stutter" when first starting off from stop when cold. It's really hard to tell if it's the engine or not.
Replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires.
If I punch it from a stop, it shifts fine, only when in that rpm range, and usually only in overdrive, but I have felt it happen when in third.(D)
Tranny was rebuilt by Aamco about 40k ago.

Any help much appreciated.

The converter is going bad.

torque converter?

Any idea what that will cost me?

Yes, torque converter. No idea on the cost, never had the work done.

I reread your post. Are you sure the engine is not misfiring again? If you know for sure it is not the engine, then I would say it's the converter.

Thanks for the help.

I would definitely have the engine checked out before removing the trans. Even if you spend a couple of $$$ at least you'll be sure it's not the engine. Might be worthwhile to change the trans filter and fluid to see if that changes anything.

If it stutters

coming off a start, then it is not the TCC. I had a problem with my 92 a few years back and it was the fuel pressure regulator. Cut it open and found a bevel worn on only one side. Seems the spring can be slightly off center and cause this wear. So the regulator would stick some times and reset itself. This was a bear to find. Just had problems with a plug fouling even though it had only 4K on it. I was sure it was torqure converter shudder. Just looked through the ATSG A4LD manual and this doesn't seem like a good candidate for transmission problem.

Thanks for all the input guys. The fuel regulator sounds logical. At first I thought the filter had fixed my rough running when starting cold. But it's come back.
I guess I'll give that a shot before the tc. It was rebuilt the same time as the transmission.

No, I'm not sure. It's very hard to tell which it is. Check engine light has never come on either.
I guess I need to take in it and have someone check it out.

Auto Tran Bucking/Jerking

My '94 Explorer bucks and jerks mostly between 35-60Mph. JiffyLube's complete fluid exchange did no good. Changed my spark plugs. I wonder if a complete service is needed or changing the Torque converter.

What is the extent of work needed to change the Torque converter, and how much does this cost.

On the way home last night, my Ex stuttered/jerked/clunked 3 times when on the highway @ approximately 55mph. The first time was really strong/harsh, like the truck stopped for a millisecond... first thought was the 4x4 kicked in -highway was wet- but not icy that I could tell and I was driving straight at the time. The next two times were not as harsh. Felt more like a miss. No CEL, although my wife has said the Battery light has come on 2x's when the tranny has downshifted from 3rd to 2nd to accelerate. Pulled over, shut down, restarted and went on my way and could not replicate again the rest of the way home (25 mile). Have 95,500 on the truck, tranny flushed 5K ago, battery ~5k old too. Do need to replace plugs/wires/fuel filter in the near future. Any thoughts? Similar experiences?? Thanks!

Check the PIP Sensor

My '96 Ford F-150 had a similar problem. It started off as a stutter every now and then to happening every time the engine got hot. Turned out to be the PIP Sensor (Hall-Effect/Pick-Up) inside of the distributor. You may also want to check the Electronic Ignition Module.
