my question is , how do i know if i should use the regular mercon fluid or the mercon v type fluid ? i have a 93 EB edition with the tow package , my haynes manual says to use the v-type , but i have read in some of the old posts different opinions as to which type to use, is there a link i can use to read a break down of the serial number tag on the tranny that would tell me what trans i have and what type of fluid to use in it ?

The transmission that came on the '93 Explorers with automatic transmissions (T on the driver's door sticker) had the A4LD (Automatic 4-speed Light Duty). It is listed on the first chart as using Mercon (not Mercon V, that is for '97 and newer models).
also the dip stick on the merc 5 trannys is diffrent and says merc 5 on the handle the handle is also ussually yellow on a merc 5 tranny not black.......putting merc5 in a 93 a4ld would be very deadly to the tranny also DO NOT use type f this is also deadly to an a4ld dextron 3 mercon is what is to be used

thanks for your help guys !!! im still learning

For sure, use straight Mercon.

you cannot buy straight mercon any more that is why it is called dextron III mercon.........the dextronIII mercon replaces the straight mercon
