I have a 99 Explorer Eddie Bauer. Some time ago, the autolamp feature stopped working.

  • Headlights work when turned on manually (high and low switch also).
  • Green light in mirror comes on when dark (and when sensor is covered).
  • Dimmer switch works (for dimming or brightening Dash lights)
  • Delay slider on mirror works (time for running lights after shutoff)

I have checked all fuses that mention headlamp. Removing specificfuses disables the identified headlight. I have also double-check connection on the back of the mirror.

I have done my homework and researched as much as possible. I have tried to read the schematics, but I see nothing to troubleshoot this further.

I see there are other posts about this problem, but I have not seen a clear solution.

Thanks for any help towards making this work. This is a nice feature to have.

autolamps pull up the headlamp relay to "bypass" the manual switch... check yea there.

Sounds likre the "light sensor" isnt doing its "switch thing".
My solution would be to try a mirror from a junk yard.
Not a fix but maby a solution.
Luck....

I hate to revive such an old thread, but I have the same problem with my new 2000 mounty. Lights work when the headlight switch is turned on, green light on mirror lights up when it's dark out, but doesn't turn on the lights. I just got the truck a month ago, and have been working to fix the other issues.

looking at the wiring diagram reminds me of trying to read Chinese written on a crumpled up napkin. I've seen the wiring diagram, and its hardf for me to understand- Maybe there is a 'wiring diagram for dummies' thread

autolamps pull up the headlamp relay to "bypass" the manual switch... check yea there. -------------------- so i need to look somewhere between the mirror and the headlamp relay? makes sense to me. this afternoon I'm going to get an alignment after replacing the ball joints, then I'll plan to take the mirror down.

Let me know what you find out. I posted this a long time ago, but I think the solution was to replace the whole rearview mirror. I just let it go, and turn on the lights manually.
