automatic hubs

i'm a new member and bought my 97 explorer about a year ago and my automatic hubs have stoppped working and i wanted to know if i could replace those with manual ones and not have to have a shifter for the transfer case inside.

Unfortunately, your '97 doesn't have locking hubs, so they couldn't have stopped working.

What exactly is the issue you are having with the 4wd system?

i thought it might be the hubs because when i would pull out kind of quickly they would make a grinding noise. it doesn't work at all right now not in auto, high or low. i'm not sure if its the hubs or something else. i don't even know where to start and i don't have any money to take it to a shop. any ideas?

The place to start would be a physical inspection of the front driveline-- transfer case, driveshaft, u-joints, CV axels. You'd have to look for anything that appears to be broken. If nothing is visibly broken, then there may be an internal problem in the front differential or the transfer case. No matter what, it is probably a moderately difficult repair, so you'll have to decide what you are up for as far as doing it yourself, taking it to a shop or just leaving it as it is.

If you really want to learn about it, I would strongly suggest getting a service manual and reading up on the driveline. Keep asking questions here too.

Were you running it in 4WD on dry pavement?

no i wasn't runningit on dry pavement. i do remember when i got my new transmission put in by a shop they said the pump on the transfer case was bad and they replaced it. not sure if there is a pump or if that is what they replaced. could the have messed the wires up? also when i put a new flange on the transmission or transfer case to the rear driveshaft the speedometer would not work so i jiggled the wire and it started working again.
