As of a year ago my automatic 4WD went out at 160,000 Mi. I was just wondering about the conversion to manual 4WD, if it actually is as easy as it sounds and also if you still use the buttons on the dash to engage the 4WD along with locking-out the hubs. Thanks for any input

This is probably in the wrong forum. The conversion to manual hubs is pretty easy. If you ever repacked the wheel bearings you'll already know what you're doing and it'll be a cinch. Plenty of threads on here on this already. http://www.explorer4x4.com/tips2.html#hub

What exactly are you looking to do? Auto hub to manual hub? Electric shift transfer case to manual shift transfer case?
Auto to manual hub is easy and parts are readily available. Yes, you still use the buttons to shift the transfer case, as the buttons don't have anything (directly) to do with the hubs.
electric shift to manual shift t-case shouldn't be a difficult swap. I think the hardest part is finding a manual shift BW 13-54, as they aren't common.
