Hey guys, a couple months ago I had my automatic transmission (A4LD) rebuilt, ever since then if floored my Explorer will still shift at 4,300 rpm, not really that much of an issue most of the time, but also seems to shift too soon when not accelerating hard as well, is this worth taking the Explorer back to the shop for? Am I correct in assuming that this will be caused by the vacuum modulater?

I'd ask the shop what they put in for the modulator. Those are available now easily with an adjustment screw built into them. They should be willing to adjust that for you.

I did my 91 and 93 A4LD's in about 1999, before the adjustable type was common. I learned of, and installed a longer modulator pin, 1/8" longer. That helped a good bit, and with the shift kit both trucks did well.

I had the same issue the first time I rebuilt my valve body on my 91 X. It would top out at 4000 RPMs at 40-45 mph in first gear WOT. It stunned me because before it would go up to 4950 RPMs at 50-55 mph before. A couple months later, my 3-4 solenoid failed and had to do another valve body drop to fix it. Afterward it was back normal. You need to make sure they properly removed and cleaned EVERY valve, spring, and piece in the valve body, assembled it back correctly (1 solenoid valve body, 6 checkballs, 2 solenoid valve body, 5 checkballs in the correct spots), hockey pucks, and make sure every VB bolt, boost valve, shift cable linkage and valve for the shift linkage is put back in the correct position. Make sure everything is torqued to specs as well. Properly flush all dirty tranny fluid out the system and refill with 80% tranny fluid, 20% trans stop slip, then drive for awhile.

They say they did all that, I didn't watch but they are supposed to be a very good shop, I haven't had the time to bring it in yet though.
