I am trying to fix my fathers buddies aviator, I think its 03 or o4 and There doesnt seem to be a lot of people who know much about the aviator through google, and Isn't it based on the explorer platform? This is a 4 wheel drive and what I am experiencing is:

supposidley this only happens at low speeds, however I havenot had time to try to hear it at high speeds, It is intermittent and sometimes doesnt happen for a while, then usually it has spurts of 5 seconds of clicking, maybe clicks 7 times or so, and it DOES NOT change with speed, it has consistent repetitinos, this is what makes it hard for me to figure out. It is a very defined clicking sounds like it is coming from passanger front wheel area

Almost sounds like a rock in the tire it is that defined, and like I said it has a consistent frequency that does not change with speed. Please help me I have to go back to school today and only have a few hours to diagnose, I am going to jack it up and mess with the wheel to see what happens.

THANK YOU!!!!!

my guess is either the bearing or the cv axle. Check both of those and see if the cv boot is leaking.

I think I am having the same problem with my 04 explorer. I took it to the dealer and after taking it for 4 test drives, they finally heard what I hear every day. They checked everything they could and found NOTHING.

I thought it was a transmission issue at first, because it seemed to click 3 times at the time it would normally be downshifting from 4th back to 1st gear in preparation for accelerating out of the stop. But more recently, it has been clicking more than 3 times, so I am puzzled again. Maybe it is just getting worse.

Some basic info in case anyone else can help:

It is always while I am decelerating
It is definitely coming out of the front end.
It happens below 10 mph for the most part.
The frequency of the clicks DOES NOT match tire rotation speed.
The frequency of the clicks DOES NOTdoes not match engine speed.
It is usually "click...click..............click" over about 1.5 to 2 seconds.
Sometimes it is "click...click...click.............click...click..click" over about 3 seconds.
It does not generate any error codes on the dash OR that the dealer could find.
It happens uphill AND downhill.
Just had brand new ball joints installed.

If I had to guess, I still think it is the computer telling the 4x4 to kick in and out and I can her the transfer case engaging and disengaging. But the dealer says that an error would show up in their diagnostic.
