the AWD transfer case is not electronically controlled, there is no motor. have you checked the fluid level? is there a leak? changing the transfer case is not that hard of a job compared to engine or transmission. you can usually find a used one for a decent price.

the awd transfer cases are pretty durable bc of their mode of operation, viscous fluid coupling, and lack of internal/external parts for them to operate. no switches, motors, wires, relays, fuses.. so if they arent working correct you can narrow down the problem a little faster. sounds like the fluid may have lost its viscous properties, not allowing the parts inside to grab to eachother and transfer power.. running like this for long will ruin the transfer case if its not already toast.
