someone metioned AWD is all 4 spinning all the time, but on the explorers and mountys wasnt it the rears only spin until it finds slip in the rears then it gos into AWD?

Been reading this and am totally confused. Well, not really. ;)
Sounds like I would be better off with AWD.

Real question I have is (specifically with a 97 Sport 4WD 5 speed manual trans 4litre engine) how hard would it be to convert it to AWD? Strictly the transfer case, or do I need stuff like computers, sensors, other neat stuff?

Mine is strictly daily driver transportation and I have to deal with snow often in the winter. The only time it would see any off road use would be if I swerve to miss something and go off the road accidently.

Thanks,
Russ

That conversion is a waste of time and money and is not just a simple swap over.
Switch to 4wd and call it a day, I will admit that auto 4wd feature sounds like some real bullshit.
The AWD transfer case has no computers, buttons, sensors, switches or lightbulbs and that is what makes it so bulletproof and great. Many late model AWD systems are uber complicated with sensors and computers I avoid these like the plague.
I daily drive a 99 Grand Cherokee myself and it has a manual shifter transfer case, these are my second choice to AWD and with this model Jeep there is no problematic center axle disconnect or "automatic hubs" which are trash as well.
The most important item in the equation is tires, I like big chunky snow and mud tires and have them on both out SUV, you lose about 2-3 mpg just turning the tire. ;)

Ok, now I am confused.
Are you saying you prefer 4wd or Awd above?

And I drive about 100 miles a day, so 2-3 mpg is a huge deal to me. :-)

Sorry,
Thanks,
Russ

I prefer whatever works reliably and I also like the stuff to be durable and long lasting.

I do drive my Jeep in 2wd 90% of the time, I use 4HI in snow and mud for about 1 month a year.
My wife drives 60 miles a day in many different conditions and never has to worry about a thing because the AWD Exploder has been as a reliable as old blue tick hound. Point, Shoot, Go.

Mine has 220k miles and drives like a dream. They hardly even make SUV's like this anymore. I cant think of a good replacement for it. I'm thinking F150 Supercrew but the electric shift transfer case has me pissed off.

hey guys sorry bout this but i cant figureout how to post a new thread
so i was checking fluids on the Mounty and noticed there isnt any coolent in the resevor and the radiator doesnt have alot in it
it is a 98 mercury Mountaineer with the 5.0 i noticed there is coolent on the passanger side on the engine mount cross member and on the fram but i cant find where it is coimg from so my question where is it most common to leak on this side?
we realy need to get this fixed because it is a DD so any help is apprictianed
Thanks!

ok so teh more i look at it im seeing moisture around all of the coolent pipes it is possible to get a clog and it to build up pressure and just blow everything out?

use the forum search engine and you can find plenty of thread to help you with the coolant leak.

now an AWD only came in the v-8 package which is a 40-60 split for power to the wheels. and it is a full time four wheel drive system.

the control trac, shift on the fly, electra-shift ( I think that is what they call it) are what they call part time boxes I guess.

you just push a button and it goes into what ever mode button you pushed.

I have a v-8 AWD explorer and there are no buttons to push. it is just full time four wheel drive.

if the rear wheels start to slip, the viscous joint will shift some power to the front wheel to help pull it through the slippage.

now there is a conversion to put a f-150 4406 transfer case in our AWD trucks to make it a form of part time four wheel drive.

and since I started reading up on it, I want one!
