When I go in reverse and the x gets to about 2000 rpms the engine disengages from the wheels and it makes a loud, nasty sounding grinding sound like that of a chainsaw. I took it to the shop and they said they replaced a part in the transfer case. I thought it was fixed but a week later it still did the noise. It even did it going forward at 70 mph. I just want some second opinions, could it be the transmission or is it still the transfer case. The noise sounds like its coming from the front of the car versus the back. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I just had my tranny replaced in my 96 xlt due to planetary gears busting.it made that same sound grinding sawing then reverse and 1st went out I lost all other gears when taking it to the tranny shop.Trans was totally lost.I'd have them pull the pan and valve body to have it checked.

I can't say anything about the tranny cause mine is a manual, but I had the same symptoms you have and it was the transfer case. I rebuild it myself. If you need info, just let me know.
