axle codes?

What is the difference in the D4 3.37 LS, and the L73 3.73 LS axles? are they different or does ford just have 2 different codes for the same thing?

My guess is that one fit the Ranger (spring-over) and one fit the Explorer (spring-under_ but offhand, I don't know.

Explorers axles are 31 spline whereas Rangers are 28 spline axles except for the Ranger FX4 which are 31 spline axles.

That might be the reason for the different axle codes.
