Axle Shaft Spacer & Snap Ring - How important are these?

I have the passenger side on... Driver side = issue.

Guys, pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by the boot? I know the axle goes into the spindle, then to the u-joint, then into the front transfer case.

What did i miss?

Oh.. Both Tbars and I both missed "driver side".. There is no boot there. There is no reason for it not to come out. There isn't even a c-clip on that side. If you took off the spindle you could just pull the axle right out of everything. With that said, there is no reason you can't put that c-clip washer and spacer on the end of the axle.

If you can't fit it in there I'd pull the spindle and then pull the axle shaft out and make sure you don't have a bad spindle bearing or seal (protruding etc) or crap around the axle shaft.

exactly what i was trying to avoid LOL! Read another couple threads and got some advice from Brock94 and DeRocha before i begin...

i'll hit it the spindle & bolts w some PB Blaster and make sure i have the correct socket to remove the ABS sensor. It's raining pretty good so might delay the removal until tomorrow night.

Have never removed an axle... When i remove the axle shaft do i need to notch a mark how it was pulled to line up later when it is reinstalled?

Thanks to all for advice!

A good way to look at these "extra" parts is if not needed, FORD would not install them.
Think saving $1.00 on each hub on 20,000,000 cars...

Make sure you re-install ALL required parts in the order they were removed.

I've never marked the angle of the axle. I just installed the axle back into the beam yesterday and there was no way to know which way they came out..

Heck, I can pull and axle in < 10 minutes since my spindle comes off easy AND, I have done the c-clip eliminator mod so even the inner passenger shaft comes right out.

Ok, job complete - you guys rock. thanks for advice as always.

Here is overview, maybe it will help someone in future:

Driver Side - since hub was already removed, pulled the spindle. Ended up the ABS bolt head was rusted pretty good but was able to hammer on a socket and remove. The spindle was rusted onto the knuckle. Had to use the chisel method... Which created more work once removed. Had to take dremmel back to knuckle to deburr all the chisel hits on knuckle. Had to take the spindle to the grinding wheel to deburr.

While is was apart, found the end of the axle was worn from not having these parts for so long. The splined washer aka axle shaft spacer would not fit nicely. The grooves were not correct, had to take dremmel and deburr the bent edges. Tested - washer fits nicely. Did not pull axle (no need).

Found that old grease had hardened to create half the issue - cleaned all parts. The real culprit was the axle seal that sits past the u-joint but before the spindle seal (can't find a name for it on the diagram). Turns out some rust had pushed out the seal from where it was seated. Hammered it back into place, cleaned all parts, reassembled, & able to get the splined washer aka axle shaft spacer w clip into place. Had to use a pry bar at the u-joint to give myself some extra play to make it easy to place the clip on. All parts move freely.

Passenger side - rechecked. Found the "boot" mentioned early about halfway up on the axle. All parts move freely w washer & clip in place.

I have all 4 wheels off the ground and tires off to fix brake lines and weld supports for the cosmetic running boards. Once i get the trans radiator back on and trans hoses replaced i'll fire it up with wheels off ground to test the 4x4 and report back. I really hope nothing else breaks LOL.

I have never seen the axle spacers. They apparently were removed before I got my 94, but I have never had any problems. The c clip is vital. Where can you get them, though? I have launched more than one out into space. The dealer doesn't carry them and can't get them, and there is only one wrecking yard in town. Is there anywhere they can be ordered?
