I just pulled the heads off of a 91 navajo to replace the head gasket when I noticed rust in the combustion chamber and in the valve area. This shouldn't be that big a deal should it? there was not a ton of rust, but there is some.

Try some WD40 on it.

A pic of the rust would help too.

Here's an outcome you don't want. You trust the only problem is a failed head gasket. You replace it to find you still have a water leak.
Srsly, do have that head checked for cracks (magnifluxed) at a cylinder head shop

rust near the valves...that is a cracked head NOT a bad head gasket. Although the symptoms of both problems are the exact same...you have a cracked head. Which was common on the 90tm heads.

Replace the heads. THEN install new head gaskets.
