Bad sensor or bad transmission

My "05" XLT went into limp mode when the rear tires spun in reverse. I was at a dead stop on a gravel road. The check transmission message came up. I shut off the engine and when I restarted it the warning light went off. It drove fine and shifted fine. I went to a dead stop, shifted into reverse and backed up without spinning the tires. This time no warning light or error message. Has anyone ran into this issue before? This is the first problem i have had with the drivetrain . This explorer has 241K on it and has been a good ride

PCM programming has a provision for preventing damage to the electronic clutch (on 4X4s) which prevents 4X4 AUTO engagement if speed difference between front and rear axles is excessive. This is likely what you experienced. Rare, scary, keep driving, if memory bugs you, try mildly spinning wheels on gravel in 4X4 AUTO. Clutch should engage (noisily), vehicle instantly gets traction. If speed difference front to rear disappears, clutch will quickly disengage, back to "normal" rear wheel drive.

I was just gonna say something about the failsafe for that on 4 auto. Makes me all the more glad I stuck with a 4X2 because I love fishtailing turns when it rains and I don't have to brown wire it.
