when ever the engine is cold it will rattle really bad especially when it idles down when the engine is still cold. it also does it in drive when stopped at all times.

the question is that i am bring it into the dealer to have the transmission hopefully replaced will this also be covered under my extended warranty.

i wil also be taking out my intake and chip. will the flowmaster exhaust be a prolblem with the warranty or will the dealer give me any crap about it

I think they have to prove that your modifications were what caused the failure. My mom had her transmission covered by her extended warranty, but had to pay like $50. She has a 2002 and had tranny problems around 60,000 miles. Turns out that the extended warranties they sell you are not even Ford extended warranties but are covered by another company. They had to get permission from this outside company before they would go ahead and do the work on her X. Worked out in the end though.

Are you sure it's not your engine's cooling fan? The plastic blades can warp and rub against wires making that type of noise.

it is definatly the timing chains because it goes away when the engine has warmed up. if it were the fan it would get worse as the engine warms up due to the fan clutch

I would think the chains are covered. Most of those warranties cover all the internal engine/drivetrain componets. The only problem might be the opinion of how bad the chains are. The dealer/shop you take it might have probs convincing the warranty people they need to be replaced. Might say come back in 6 months or so. BTW how many miles did you get before they started to rattle?

i am relly not sure howmany miled but they have been rattling for 6months

How many miles are on the odometer?

78k

depending on the year ford had an extended warranty on the timing chain tensioners. i had the same problem in my 99 sport sounds like a big rig you can here the chian rattling , but had more than 70k miles so had to get the work done myself. i got the work done for around $300 at a ford dealer

Thanks, my fronts went around 70,000 covered under the extended warranty/ONP . The rear chains went at 600 mile later.

I know of at two other engines where the rears went in the 70-90,000 range. This will be the LAST new ford I will puchase. Pity I have 77 ford with motor that runs like a top and has never used oil- pretty good for 25 years I will never get rid of that one...:D

Ford needs to own up to this or change the service book in the glove box to say:

100,000 miles Replace Engine (only appiles to 4.0 SOHC engines)

I was quoted $200 or $250 for my 00M12 fix, but I'm doing it myself with the $50 kit. If it's rattling, then there is a problem with it, and that should be enough to prove that there is a problem with it. Also because it's a pretty well known problem I'd think that it should be covered too, but you never know what kind of stuff they'll pull....have you gone and checked with the dealer yet?

i am dropping it off early monday morning so we will see what happens. here is the list i gave them

Transmission slips and misses 1-2 shift
Bad timing chain rattle especially when cold but noticible at all times.
Align wheels after torsion twist (do they have the eliptcal camber adjusters there?)
Flush Brake Fluid
Change front differental fluid
See if they can findout why the foglights don't work (fuses, relay, Bulbs all good)

i am hoping for a new transmission under warranty but i don't think i will get my wish:D

well everything but the alignment anf fluids was under extended warranty with a $100 charge. they said they neeed it overnight so i guess this is a good sign considering i dropped it off at 8am

I don't get it. You guys must not take care of your trucks, or are very unlucky. I have 121K miles on my truck, and I haven't had any problems at all with any part on the motor except the IAC.

i heard they fixed a lot of things in 2000 the only thing that has happned to mine was the iac and the recalled intake orings. now the timing chains i think your 4.10's are a lot easier on the tranny then my 3.55's

ok it has been there for three days. they said it was gonna be a few more days just for the chains because it was a big job.

o well at least it does not cost me anything

Actually I take better care of my X then myself. But you have a 2000 engine. It sounds like they finally got something right because I don't think there are any recalls for the cassettes/other issues. The problems really seem to be with the 97.98, and maybe even 99 motors. Pretty sloppy but hey Ford Quality is Job 1

arg they only had one of the chains so i have to take it back for them to finish it up
