Was driving my '02 XLT with 94,000 miles on it....I got gas then drove about 1/8 of a mile. There was this loud banging noise coming from under the car- it almost sounded like I was dragging something on the pavement.

I parked the car, and it was making this pretty bad griding noise when I threw it in reverse and backed up a few feet.

I got it towed, but they can't take a look at it until Monday.

Any thoughts on this?

slide under the vehicle and see where the banging is coming from

EDIT: i just realized you probably dont have your vehicle with you right now cauz it sounds like its in a shop - hehe sorry.

That sounds like happened to me when my rear end let go.

What I should have mentioned..I posted about a month ago about something kind of similar..

A few times when I would put the car in R, I would have to slam on the gas for it to move, and it would make this loud clanking noise. They said it sounds like the tranny is starting to go.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the tranny this time, but the clanking noises this time were when I was driving and moving in reverse. I thought the tranny dropped because it sounded like I was literally dragging something under my car- but when I looked there was nothing there.

Can't wait to find out what this is :fire:

On my AWD that happened twice. Once for the front driveshaft CV, and once for the transfer case.

What exactly happened when your rear end let go? My mechanic called today and said it's "out of his reach" and he sent the car over to Ford..they said something about a rear end but they had to look at it again.

Sorry to Hijack but finally someone with more miles on their '02 X than me. I currently have 93,500.

Haha wow, it makes me feel a little bit better knowing tha someone has close to what I have. Put all those miles on myself :D

I'm comming up on you guys. So far, i'm at 85K on my 02 X... ;)

Maybe that's what's wrong with my 02 XLS with 53,000 miles. I can be braking approaching a stop sign or downshifting pulling a slight grade and I get this loud metallic slap or clank noise under the vehicle. Transfer case is a possibilty. The dealer replaced a solenoid pack in the trans and reprogrammed the PCM because the 2-3 upshift was soft and the trans would slip sometimes. Didn't eliminate the clank though...almost like weights slapping together on a barbell. Thanks.
