ball joint replacement

My truck has 122k on it. She's a 1993. It shakes like a MF when I hit hrd bumps. I think it's the ball joints. It still has the factory non greaseable p.o.s. ? is do most of you have good success removing these without any heat at all. I think the press , and impact gun trick sounds the best , as I don't have torches. I believe my left upper is bad , but i'm prepared to do all 4 to get it over with , thanks , josh

I will try and put together a little step by step how to on replacing them on 1st gens. I have several pics, but believe removing the spindles were bar far the hardest part.

Josh you're right around the corner from me..Welcome to the site...

Would the 2nd gen be a lot different from the 1st gen install?

Yeah, I ***** out his write up all the time. The uppers are really easy to to do. Just remove the spindle to ball joint bolt, and the two bolts holding the control arm to the frame. On the passenger side it's even easier, since the upper control arm is two pieces, so yo don't have to mess with disconnecting the whole arm from the frame.

This writeup is quite good. Doesn't cover the uppers but you get the idea. http://www.haroh.com/explorer/ball_joint.html

That is a good writeup for a 2nd gen, but on a 1st gen 4x4 it's a lot more involved.

You've got to remove the brake caliper (easy). Then you've got to remove the whole hub and rotor; time consuming and those 2 thrust washers can be a pain in the a** but not too bad.

There are no shortcuts that I know of on a 4x4 1st gen,
you gotta remove the rotor/hub assembly just to get to the lower balljoint.
