Banging under the Explorer -- Need Help

I just recently purchased a 97 XLT V8 AWD...my situation is that I was driving on the high, got off the highway and noticed when i accelerated that there was a loud banging sound from under my explorer...in the front...it increased when i accelerated and slowed down when i decreased my speed...i immediately pulled over and looked underneath...nothing could be found...I then drove to the nearest service station for help...i parked it and told him the situation...I came back later and he said that when he drove it there was no sound...he also put it on the rack and found nothing...I then drove it the rest of the evening with no banging...the banging occured again on my way home the next evening and did it for about 15 mins and then went a way...I am taking it in tomorrow...does anyone have any idea what this could be..

Also I am wondering how the AWD works and is it causing a constant humming when i slow down and speed up...or is this something else...

The heat shield for the catalytic converters may be loose. They have been know to cause banging noises when they are loose.

I took the Explorer in and they found nothing...
But the same night driving, it happened and i went directly back to the shop...

I had a technician ride with me...he stated that he believes it to be the "shifting rod" in the transfer case...he state that there has been a service recall for this part...so it goes back monday...hope that is what it is..

Well it got this finally fixed ...it needed a new transfer case and a coupler.....also when replacing the transfer case..they found that the drive shaft was messed up as well..

All is fixed expect one thing....so go to post called "shuttering when trying to shift"....

All in all, good thing i bought the extended warranty because the final bill was $1700... and the deductible was all i had to cover....
