So on Saturday when i attempted to start my 98 Explorer, it wouldnt turn on. Gave it a jump with the good ol' mini van and it started right away. Let it run for awhile and drove it up the street. Shut it off and it restarted fine. Today, when I went to start it, the same happened. The starter was turning over and everything. The chimes worked, lights worked, cigeratte lighter worked. Gave it a jump and it started right up. The counsil is reading that the power is right where it should be. I don't think it is the alternator because everything is working electronically and right after the truck will start again. Could my battery be crapping the bed?

When it's running have you tried disconnecting the battery cable? That'll help show if it's the alternator but I think you're right that it's not.

It might be the battery. Are you trying to start it on a cold morning? If it's a dying battery, it still might hold enough of a charge to keep the lights, chimes, et...working but not enough to get it started and when your minivan jumps it, its giving it that push it needs.

What kind of battery is it?

Sounds like a dying battery, but make sure all connections are CLEAN and that the battery cable ends are not Cracked or worn, if so replace them.

I suggest you get the battery tested before buying another one.

I believe it is an interstate battery. The previous owner put it in. I got the truck about a month ago and it has sat in my driveway. I started in the afternoon both times. Temp was about the same. The electronic thermostat in the truck read 38 degrees.

Are you saying the starter spins, but the motor doesn't? If that's the case, it would be a starter solenoid.

It sounds like a dead battery. You can hear the starter clicking and as soon as I jump it it roars to life. It seems as if the battery just isnt holding the charge.

The connections are clean for sure. Looked at that today.

Take my advice.

So is the starter not spinning then? I'm confused here....

The click, click noise is the starters benzel clicking cause the battery is low, but when he jumps the battery it starts up np's.

It can also be a bad connection Ground to the starter.

You know that sound you get when your battery is dead? The clicking from the starter. That is there. I just was wondering why my battery isnt holding a charge. I think it is about garbage.

OK, I got it now. I thought you meant the starter was actually spinning but not engaging....

I would test the voltage myself with a volt meter, or go someplace and have them test it.

Yea i'll probably do that but the reader on the council is directly in the middle. Don't know how accurate it is but that is where it is holding steady.

Yes, but you need to test the battery with the truck off, while starting, and while running to get an accurate feel for how the battery is performing. Especially since this only happens after the truck has been sitting. The gauge may not move much since it is more a measure of alternator output....it is not very accurate either, only there to give you an idea.

Thanks, ill give it a shot onces it warms up outside

Oh boy if you read my posts longtime back in your thread you would have not have to post ten more posts with Devilboy222

I mentioned already check connections and test the battery... :)
