Okay...i have a 93 explorer and yesterday it wouldnt start. After trying to jump it i noticed that the positive battery cabe was badly corroded and had split apart by the terminal. i put on a new connector and the truck started but it made a really loud grinding noise (like when you turn your key but hold it forward for too long) I believe there were 2 wires that went into the original connector...a bigger one and a smaller one (to the alternator?) did i wire it wrong? what do i need to do to get it to start? thanks a bunch

First off why was the battery dead or was it? Sounds like your soleniod is bad and is letting the starter stay ingauged to long.
I don't know off the top of my head where the wires go but you could have them screwed up.
What happened that you had to jump your truck?

Time to replace the battery cables. 1st Gens are infamous for battery cables corroding from the inside out.

Sounds to me like the soleniod also. I did the same thing and the sound is like the starting is not disengaging. I remember that i had the wires hooked up to the soleniod wrong. If i remember correctly you have to have three wires on one of the post and one wire on the other. Good Luck

I couldnt get my truck to start (seemed like a dead battery was the reason) so i went to disconnect the battery cables to clean them and try again. thats when i noticed that the positive cable was badlly corroded and had split apart. i cut the positive cable back to where it was good and put a new connector on it. there originally were 2 wires going into the connector and i put both back into the new one (im wondering if they should be separated by something though). It's definetly the starter engaging for too long but i dont know if its a faulty solenoid or a bad wire connection. is there anyway to know for sure? Thanks for all the help!

okay, as of now i have replaced the entire starter, the starter relay, and the negative battery cable connector. I am still having the same problem... the truck starts up but the starter remains engaged. is ther anything else you guys can think of that is causing this? I'm going to have to call the local Ford dealership tommorow and have it brought in because im basically stuck. thanks for the help

check your ignition system ,where you but the key to start the truck ,it could be getting stuck when you turn the key.

Remove the little wire on the fender solenoid. Vehicle should be in park, turn the ignition key to on and then take a screwdriver from the positive lug of the solenoid to the coil post. This will crank the engine and let it start. If the grinding is gone, the problem is in the keyswitch.

As I have read your story, you didn't remove the wires from the starter solenoid on the fender. Some have removed these wires and put the alternator output on the terminal that goes to the starter. There should only be one wire there. What happens is when the engine starts the alternator supplies power to the starter solenoid.

well i rigged a switch to the starter relay to bypass the ignition system, and the starter disengaged but is still hung up on something. i think it could be grinding the flywheel so im gonna pull the starter when i get home on sunday night (going outta town). thanks for all of your help so far! i really appreciate it. i'll definetly be back soon with updates.
