Hello all, I am sure somebody out there knows the answer to this one. I am just not one of them. The rig in question is a 98' Explorer 4.0 OHV with what I can surmise is a cracked head. Probably between the valves. I have been doing a lot of reading about these but have yet to see just which replacement heads are best. I mean decent heavy duty heads not $1000 trick things. So if anybody knows which ones to get and where, I sure would appreciate the info.
Thanks Dave

Thanks Dono, Thats what I needed to hear.

you want the 95tm engine quest heads.

95tm's are the same as 98tm's, except they have larger exhaust ports.

For a stock replacement he needs 98tm heads with the fast burn ports.if not he can risk damaging his cats.Alabama cylinder heads sells complete heads for good price.if you had aftemarket cats or plan on minor performance mods the 95tm heads would flow better in stock form:salute:

I wouldn't think the cats would have an issue. The same volume of air is still moving thru the cats, no matter if its the 95 or 98tm.

JD's probably right though, with no engine mods, no real need to move to 95tm's. Im still running 98's with slightly ported, and polished exhaust.

The velocity is different. Helps the cats burn faster.95tms on stock cats "could " cause them to clog and throw O2 codes.honestly I dont think it would matter if the cats are new or aaftermarket. But if they are old may have issues.

Thanks you guys for your input, looks as though we will be going with a set of what
advanced cylinder head calls an aftermarket heavy duty head. They said it was compatible with 4.0 ohv 96' thru 04'. Any thoughts? Im on the west coast and these guys are in California. They are new heads with gaskets and bolts included for a little over $500. Hope they work good. Thanks Dave

pls post a pic or two of them when they show up. Were all interested if they have the smaller, or larger exhaust ports. Price is right.

We hit a snag with the place in Cal. had to order some from Virginia, total price was $492. That was with gaskets, bolts and free shipping. I was led to believe these are similar. I will post some pictures when they show up. That price was for the pair. Ive got my fingers crossed cant wait to see them. Dave

Amazingly cheap. Awesome!

They just showed up, they look ok very stock looking. Didn't see a specs list, I am assuming that these are remans and that is NOT what the listing said they were to be.
This is my first 4.0 teardown and if these heads are the same as what we are pulling off I am gonna be pissed. I am posting some pics, I hope. My 18 yr old daughter isnt here to make sure I do it right. Dave

I cant seem to find the pics that I just transferred from my camera, so I measured the openings they are as follows: Exhaust port is 1.440 x 1.296 and the intake is 2.090 x 1.175. I will take more pics and try it again. Maybe I might wait for my daughter, I am not known for my patience with computers.

Stock heads will be stamped 98tm or simpler (97tm-95tm-93tm-90tm) even if they are aftermarket they will be an exact copy of stock, its what they are made out of and the inner water passages that are different. Engine quest is the only company that claims increases in flow and they are minor. They dont make "performance" heads for the ohv

Couldn't find any stamped or cast in info on these heads, definitely not the same as the ones we pulled off. The old heads have casting numbers all over them and we did find a very small crack in one cyl. that was causing all the fuss. I do think these are new upon closer inspection of them. Despite a furious battle with the egr to intake tube, everything went together smoothly and the rig seams to be running quite well. I have to say the cylinder walls looked remarkably fresh for a engine with 170 K. Virtually no ring ridge. Still cant figure out how to put a picture on this forum, if your interested I can put them in an e-mail. Just let me know. Dave
