I recently picked up a 97 Explorer and the OD is slipping constantly. Even at low speeds it will not hold the engine. The other 3 gears perform fine so I'm guessing the transmission is on it's way out which I'm fine with. What I am trying to find is the best 4 or 5 speed transmission that I can reasonably adapt to the back of my 5.0 in order to start building up for rocky trails/slick rock/etc. Also, will I need to have the ECU reflashed to deal with a manual in place of the auto?
I'd prefer a 5 speed but I've read some good things about the NP435 transmission. Just trying to see what has been done successfully without having to rebuild the entire vehicle.
