I had an Explorer many years ago and loved it, a woman who eventually became my wife talked me into selling it and regretted it ever since (selling, not marriage :D). I recently picked up a 92 sport with a 5 speed trans and proceeded to blow the slave cylinder from pulling a boat to and from a dock all summer. Previous owner just replaced it, but I'm guessing it was a cheap reman.

My question, what is the very best slave available so I do not have to go through the BS of replacing the slave a second time?

Welcome to the forum.

The best slave cylinder available is probably the one that came in them new. It seems to last the longest.

Other than that, the replacement Motorcraft is probably the best you can get, although that might just be a re-boxed Luk brand, which makes the OE clutch stuff for Ford.

A lot of the 91-92 stuff is no longer available (the 91-92 clutch/slave/master is different from the 93-97), so my experience is that the current stuff Ford will sell you is for the newer 98+. What this means is you get a slightly newer revised design slave, which is probably a good thing. The downside to this on a 91-92 is that you usually have to change out EVERYthing (slave, master, clutch, clutch line, etc.) in order for it all to work as designed.

You can still get a lot of 91-92 stuff aftermarket, so you could just buy Luk/Sachs everything and keep the old 91-92 system, or just buy the master cyl if that's all you need. I don't really see any problem with using the newer slave cyl on the 91-92 either, but just if you get engagement/disengagement issues, that could be why. Generally the best course of action on a 91-92 would be just updating all the hydraulics to the 93-97 system.

+1
Seems to give you the least amount of problems. I have one in my parts box for when I need it.
