wattage has a lot to do with the output you are gonna have from a sub but there is MUCH MUCH more to it that just having a 3000 watt amp the impedance in the sub the sensitivity on the sub and the design of the box i have seen many ppl with ok amps sounding way better than ppl with super nice amps and this happens b/c of the drivers and boxes they have, if u like a speaker research about it make sure ur getting the ideal enclosure for it, the car its goin in and the positioning plays a huge role on the final outcome....

i have a kicker solo X 18 in my explorer. retail in stores are around 1300-1500 per sub. i got mine online for 790 plus 140 shipping. i also run a MA audio 4400 amp. 4400 watts or power. the sub needs to see atleast 4000 to be worth your money. i run a 80 farat cap. a 200 amp alternator, 0 gauge wire, and threw out the fuse and went with a circut breaker. had the box made in the local shop " sound of tri-state" set up for SPL. let me tell you OMG it makes the w-7 sound like a w-1, lol deff. worth the money. if u go this route, invest in sum dyno-mat... seriously.. this sub sounds like there's a midget in the back seat hittin you in the back with a sledge hammer. a W-7 does sound nice... but has nothing on the solo X 18. and it can handle up to 10000 watts of power.... that is NOT rms. rms is 5000. like i say though. deff worth the cash.....

ok for a good sub that hits hard as hell but sounds like crap go with the solo x it will raddle your brain with a good ported box if you want hard hitting and sound good go with the w7 they hit hard and sound great tuned right they are worth their money if you want the mix and if your wanting trunk room instead of box you should keep the l7 in sealed box bc for one sub ported right will be bigger than the sealed you got for the 2 my ported box for 2 10s is 6.35cu feet but with some cheap speakers and a small amp o can out do most with better

Boston Acoustics just came out with a new sub for $700 that you can replace the voice coil if it blows. A new voice coil is like 50 bucks. I have no idea what quality a Boston Acoustics sub is, just saw it in a magazine and it looks like a pretty cool thing.

Hey there. I have tried alot of the mainstream stuff, ie. kicker, kenwood, pioneer, alpine, jbl, etc. (back in high school i thought car audio was the only thing in life). Of everythign ive tried, and what i currently have in the truck id the Kenwood Excelon KAC-X811D. It's a mono block amp producing 919W RMS @ 2ohm, o 1016W RMS @1ohm. The peak power is 1800W. If you go to a retail store, they run aound 549-649, but i picked mine up off of http://www.hookedontronics.com new for i think 280 or so. Between that, and the one alpine type x 12", which i got for aound 220 i think, it rocks my explorer. It's fairly cheap for the set to an extent, but it is amazing sound. Hope this helps.

the solo x does sound sloppy, but anything in a ported box sounds sloppy... ive seen w7's run in a ported box, and they sound like crap.... worse then the solo X. the solo sounds good in a sealed box to. it gets its bad name because the subwoofer was built for SPL aplications....... if u want spl, u go with ported boxes.... the w7's were not designed for that. there were ment to be in a sealed enclosure. so it all depends wqhat ur looking for. people put the solo X in a sealed box, it sounds good, but not as strong as it would be in a ported box, but it comes with the slop... u cant avoid it. SPL subs=slopp notes.

Loud or clean? I pick clean.

And for the person who said it is designed for large rooms, yes it is intended for that, but it would work just as well in a car.

not everything in a ported box sounds sloppy at all

my 3 9500s (which aren't even remotely sq type subs at all) have very, very good sq in 9 cubes tuned to 30 hz. Better sq than in other installs i've done with sealed W7s, memphis mojos, and etc.. A lot of that has to do with the stiffness of the rest of my vehicle and sound deadening (the fiberglass headliner insert piece made a huge sq difference)

I'm running an 8w7 with a jl 500/1 amp I went with the 8w7 because it was the baddest thing I could fit behind the seat of my single cab dodge. I've alway run Jl they are definitely worth the $. My 8 sounds cleaner and hits harder than a lot of these people riding around with their trunks rattling. Now that I bought a sport trac I'm thinking about goin with a jl 13tw5 which is the thin jl so that I can get it to fit behind my back seat. Even goin from the 8 to a 13 all the shops are tellin me that the 13 won't hit as hard or sound as clean as the 8w7.

Bumpin a thread that is over 6 yrs old.....

vs. starting a new one to rehash the same stuff just with newer tech. I say he's right on the money. Best to keep all of the info in one place. Makes it easier for others doing research in the future.

Thats a matter of opinion.

Im currently running a 12W7 ported in my x. 2 cf, 40 inches of port, tuned to 28hz. Running it with the JL 1200HD, sounds amazing. I dont really care for the higher end of the subs (70 - 100 hz) but that might be the resonanse of the X itself. best Ive done on a termlab was 146.1, on the dash with test tones. But when it comes to the lows (35 hz and down), it is a beast. Is it worth the Money? I didnt care, Im currently running all jl audio gear and am quite happy both with the sq and spl!

I find that nearly impossible. I would love to see a vid to prove me wrong. The w7 isn't meant to hit those numbers and I highly doubt it at 28 hz. It would have to be tuned much much higher to even come remotely close. The w7 is a great sql driver. The price is absolutely insane.

$900 for a 12....Insane. A Zcon, Xcon or Icon will hand the JL it's hind quarters for a fraction of the price.

There are a lot of great drivers on the market that should be considered before getting the shaft with a w7.

FI Q - AA Havoc - TC LMS-R - to name a few.

No need to pay that much, my 10W7's (2 of them) were had new for 740 on ebay, and the 12W7 for less than 500. granted I get no warranty, but I have been hammering this 12 for almost 4 years now, with no worries. As far as the video goes, believe it, dont believe it. No matter to me, was stating my side of things. The system wasnt built for spl, but does have the ability to do so. And as far as all those other subs, remember the W7 is running on 10 year old technology, well before those other subs were worth speaking of. I didnt NOT call the W7 the best sub, it was just the best sub for me. I can name 30 other subs that will out due the W7 on every spl contest, but getting loud is teenagers, who dont need Audiophile equipment in the price range of JL AUDIO. Everyone has their own taste, u want something that does 160 db @ 47hz. . . . . fine, I want something that does audiophile sound at no matter the frequency! My Alarm clock is loud, that doesnt make it worth listening too! Just my .02
