I have a 1996 Explorer Limited Edition with the 5.0L V-8. Been a great vehicle but at 167K the steering rack needs to be replaced.

What at the opinions of the best rebuilt or new steering rack units? Motorcraft, or ones from O'Reilly, Advance Auto or Auto Zone? Perhaps another supplier for a high quality unit?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike

It's hard to say. I would not buy anything from autozone other than brand name products. I would see who gives the best warranty.

l would think the best most expensive would Motorcraft unit with Napa quality being as good with a break on cost.

Myself being a cheap and poor industrial mechanic and can change the rack myself for free would do a cheap Cardone rack.
Seems like a bit of an uncommon failure on these trucks, pretty durable units considering the abuse and neglect they are subjected to.
Good luck with it.

I purchased a rack from this place for the old Volvo I used to have and it was inexpensive and worked perfect.... I'm not sure their prices can be beat and it was delivered quickly.
