Best tuning option for a 4.0L 4x4 ST ?

Figured this was the best forum, even though it's an ST I'm driving...

2010 Sport Trac 4x4 4.0L

First of all, I don't want a V8. Overall I'm just fine with the 4.0L.

- I do find it falls a little flat occasionally at about 35-40mph, when it's in higher gears, and I want to accelerate. I feel a little shift point work may help.

- I use my truck to carry a bit of tools. It has a cap on the back, and I'd say I'm always lugging around a total of about 500-750lbs (including cap).

Anyone have an opinion on what the best product would be to mess with?

- Diablo T or I1000
- SCT SF 3015
- Hyper tech Max Energy
- Hyper tech ECON
- What about Ford IDS with VCM/VMM?
- others I'm not aware of?


I already run 91 octane (all I can get where I am) fuel. I already feel that the engine has enough power for my needs. As you might guess from looking at my signature, tourque means more to me than HP anyhow.

I would go with what ever tuner (as in business or a guy that tunes) you are going to use, either by going to that tuner or by an email tune. I'm a big SCT fan and have used the X2's years ago and been using the Xcal 3 for about 5 years now on different mustangs, expeditions and my merc. I went through breenspeed since they tuned the Mercs and a lot of tuners I would trust don't. And a canned tune (that you just buy for your vehicle) is hit or miss. They are usually on the super safe side and can add some power/performance. I've seen some guys have bad luck with the higher canned octane tunes. All vehicles are different and yours might like 12* timing with 91 octane but the very exact vehicle like yours might ping at 12* timing on 91 and 11* would be better. Why? who knows. Best is to always get a tune from someone like Breenspeed, VMP, or who ever, vs the canned tune. But if I had to pick, It would be SCT or Diablo, nothing else.
