ok guys i have a 96 sport ohv 4.0. 5 speed manual. with the air box eliminated, no cat with a 40 series muffler, oh and a jets chip from years back. i got 33's and a 4.56 gearing and its a dog for low end torque. last time i changed my plugs and wires were at 80,000 miles and i now have 136,000. my question is what can i do to get that pulling power back? i was goin to start by putting a universal cat on to create more back pressure and maybe some new plugs. what else would be a good idea?

do you think if for now i was just to remove the jets chip until i get the x-calibrator it would cause any problems? also i thought since my truck is a stick that a performance chip isn't realy going to make a noticable difference????

Lots of hidden performance advantages remain with new programming for the standard transmission vehicle as well. Ask the Mustang enthusiasts.

has anyone on here used the x-calibrator on there explorer???? if so can you give me some feedback on what you think. i'm just a lil sceptical on spending over 300 bucks on a chip. especially since i already bought a jets chip a couple years ago and it was a total waste!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't own one, but here is something to think about...

-The Jet chip is cheaper than the X-Calibrator but it is universal for Explorers. Once you do a mod, it's still the same program. End of story.

-The X-Calibrator is a bit more $$ than the Jet chip, but it's custom for each Explorer. If you add a BBK throttle body, K&N open intake, flowmaster, supercharger, etc, you can have the chip reburned so it knows that it's not a program for a soccer mom's Explorer. It realizes that it's a modified motor, so it will be a better program to get the most out of your mods. Another advantange is you can get multiple programs for your truck. You can get a gas mileage program (put it on this for a long trip, etc) and then also get a performance one for when you REALLY wanna see how those mods feel. ;) You can have it burned for premium fuel, regular, etc. ALL CUSTOM to your truck!!! If you still need more opinions, talk to Aldive and the rest of the guys with experience with them. Also contact Doug @ Bamachips.com and he'll hook you up with the perfect setup for yours. :)

I will be purchasing an X-Calibrator for mine (also a 5 spd) once I do the motor swap (about this summer).

quick question you mentioned a throttle body, what advantages does this mod create?

Supercharge it (I think Vortech has one, around $4k).

Do a V8 swap

My '92 Explorer GT (4 door, 3.27, XL, 4x2, sticker) is a lot faster than my Limited, but still got blown out by a '00 Focus ZX3 sticker. Flowmaster series 40 single, airbox mod, throttle cable mod, 4.0 emblems...

Still slow. I thought up the idea of swapping 4.0L SOHC top end parts onto my OHV but here they said it would be way too much work. Enough to make a 5.0 swap more worthwhile.
