The ADLD has been known to have clutch bands go out, so yes it can be considered a "bad" transmission, but I can give you plenty of examples of other car companies with just as bad transmissions. It's just easier to blame Ford

And what is your problem!

You got 156K and it is still working.
Your daddy works on transmissions.
Sounds like you have it made. You need to learn to be more accepting of faults in people and transmissions. The A4LD is really a sweetheart.

156!! the day after mine hit 90 it went. like it was programmed to die at 90k. no towing, off-roading, mainly highway. i wish mine lasted like yours.

Did he actually say "it ain't worth a spit."

****...why do i get my ass jumped? my dad works on trannnys for a living yes, but that dont mean i have everything handed to me , i think the tranny has been rebuilt before...but who know. my dad didnt say spit but it was close to it, he always has them come in the shop some with the shafts twisted to hell others just blown...i was wanting to know because of the blower they sell for the 4.0..i asked him about it, he just laughs and says that tranny wont hold

dude...more accepting of faults in people...man you dont even know me! WTF! and trannys...yeah trannys go out...but they can be made better if someone with the know how works in it to make the weak link stronger

hey shorty, any tranny life-extending tips!:D i don't want the second one to bow out early on me too!

Two things you can do

Put an external transmission filter on, the spin on type. Drop the pan every couple of years and retorque the valve body bolts. The internals have gotten a little stronger and now more valve body problems are showing up, including blowing out gaskets.

Well, my 94 with 120,000 miles tends to disagree.
Original tranny.
No rebuild.
No problems.
Lot's of towing.
Lot's of "spirited" driving.
Heck, it even has the original fluid in it.

as with most things in life, it's luck of the draw. you can get a car that will never die, and you can get a car that almost dies coming off the lot. so the real question is...HOW LUCKY R U??? hehe:p

Uh, I believe he was joking. You might want to consider that before running off on a tangent and looking stupid.

look the post subject reads " and what is your problem!" that right there shows me hostility, and i dont see any jokeing manner such as " :p ;) " so you can see how i would snap...:mattmoon:

You remind me of the kid

who posted here asking where he could get a seat for his Explorer. His dog had chewed it up. He also added that his family owned a car dealership.

So this might be a good time to talk to your father if he really does rebuild transmissions. I have noticed that there are transmission shops on about every corner. So, there must be a lot of bad transmission designs out there. The A4LD does have a higher that average repair rate for a couple of reasons. It was designed for an under 3.0L engine. When they first put it in an Explorer, it was their best guess at "beefing it up" to take 30% more power. It is remarkable that they have held up as well as they have. The only savior was the under power V6 in this vehile. The more common problems were the torque converters and the OD planetary. And it isn't correct to lump all the A4LD tramsmissions together as there have been so many changes that there is a seperate book for them and the non 4.0L is very different inside.

Many of the rebuild parts are updated versions. This is a fairly simple transmission to diagnose and to work on. The parts are dirt cheap and a part failure shouldn't pose any problem to someone like you. I hope your father takes the time to show you how to rebuild one. Ford has made a lot of these and considers the failure rate acceptable. Even the 5R55E is just an A4LD with falsies. And yes, you should be more accepting of people! Lighten up.

Hostilely yours,
Opera

PS: why don't you find out the five most common parts that fail and report back to ys.

I have 179k on my 92 tranny, and it's still going. my dad has 212k on his 93, and its still going. The only thing I did was take it to AAMCO at around 110k for a trainy flush. I know my dad took care of his ford ex based on book recommendations

 "Can't we all just get along????

Now, let's all take a breath, :chug: and be friends.
