The other day it started happening, when i was driving, the parking brake light would be on and i could feel a resistance when rolling, but when i hit the brakes the sounds and grinding was horrible. It sounded like the axle was about to fall off. I drove around for about 2 hours then when i started driving again my brakes are gone. Not fully gone, but the pedal goes all the way down to the floor and brakes a little. I dont know what to do. help...

Sounds like you lost the linings off the brake pads.

Jack it up, pull off a wheel and look at both outside and inside pads. The grinding was probably the metal rivets from teh pads rubbing the rotors. Also check your brake fluid level under the hood. With the linings gone the pistons would be fully extended and all of the fuid that should be in the resevoir is now in the piston.

You are probably now due for a complete brake job, including replacing the rotors. Could be fairly expensive at a shop ($400-$600 maybe more depending on what they replace) or about 1/2 that if you can do it yourself.

Good luck

there is plenty brake fluid and my friend suggested it might be my bearings, we took off both front wheels and the hubs looked horrible. The left wheel spun up in the air, but the right one didnt. And the parking brake light stays on.

Just curious ... what did the problem end up being? Brake rotor? Bearing?

I kept having this vision of something I saw once in an auto shop class, where a disk rotor had lost its surface entirely, showing the backing ribs in the back. Your shoes/caliper piston trying to brake on that kind of surface would sure create that kind of gawdawful noise ...

Let us know what happened :-)

Peace,
