While going to the field the other day in the mud, I inadvertantly hit reverse while the truck was still going forward. Loud pop and then nothing. Transfer case is fine and it is definatly in the transmission. Any ideas what in the transmission likely broke? This is my only transportation and I have been out of work for six months so I have to fix as cheaply as possible.

Welcome, I don't know what transmission you have. Most likely it will have to come out. It is rare that nothing is wrong when that happens. Good luck,

I'm guessing an auto trans? And what engine do you have?

5r55e

It's a 97 ranger 4x4 with an 4.0 and a 5r55e five speed automatic. Started to remove it but having trouble with the top bolts and the bolt holding the dipstick. Just not enough room to get my fat hands in that little area.

Use long extensions and a swivel. I have removed the top bolts from back where the t-case is supposed to sit on my old ranger. :D

Making some progress on getting the tranny out but am still struggelling with the top two bolts to the bell housing and the dipstick bolt. Right now I'm wishing these trucks had a doghouse to get to them like the aerostar has. Guess I'll try again in the morning. Any idea how many bolts ther actually are. Advance autoparts told me there were only six but it looks like there are nine.

there isn't a trap door under the carpet? I think all trucks have them

Did you find any long extensions for the sockets? I just have a set of those cheap ones. 1', 1'-6", and 2'. Dad did break one of the 1'-6" ones once (hes stout! ), but I bought another set eventually.

Used about 8 2" extensions and a couple of 4". There is about 1/2" of play at the end with all of the small extensions. Thought I was on the top ones, but looking at a picture of the bell housing in the forum looks like there are 2 at the very top that I have to try to get to. Just getting ready to go back down and work on it. I have never worked on one of these newer trucks like this, this is a lot more challenging than the old trucks that I have owned in the past.

Gave up on it and had it towed to AAMCO. I've heard really good things about them, but have also heard some real horror stories. Anyone have any personal experience with them?

Just got the call back from AAMCO, they said the splines in the torgue converter were stripped along with solenoids that need replaced. $1700 for rebuilding transmission, replacing torgue converter, and reinstallation.

Wow, you should price a new one to compare.

Rebuilt transmission from dealership is $2400. Oriely $1900 and advance $2100. None of these others included a new torque converter and the warrenty was either halved or voided if I towed or plowed with the truck. I found some online for $750-900 but most cost around $260 for shipping.
AAmaco removed the tranny, will replace it, and rebuild it for the $1700. I just hope they do good work.

Yeah, sounds like the best option. What kind of warranty will Aamco give you?

Haven't got to read it yet, but they said 12 month/12,000 miles. It doesent matter whether I go mudding, plow the field, or tow. Just trying to figure out the money situation, so I can tell them to go on and start the work.
