I purchased my 98 Explorer Sport in late Dec. 2011 and joined here in Jan... Anyway, knowingly it could use a little TLC, it didn't have any major issues, interior was in great shape (non smoker), and I was impressed with the previous owner's record keeping on the vehicle. Although I am NOT a auto mechanic by trade, I'm no stranger to turning a wrench... out of necessity. All it really takes is a little "Common Sense". Right? Lol.

Below is a list of some of the stuff that I have done, thanks to all the knowledgeable people on this website…and I did most all of it, just by using the "search feature". HATS OFF TO YOU ALL, and to the Web Designers!!!

I would really be interested in knowing how much a reputable shop, or dare I say... "Dealership" would charge to do all this work…don't forget troubleshooting time. I know a professional wouldn't have as much time in troubleshooting as I do, but I know it's worth something! So... BILL ME!

Any Professional "s" that might have the time to do this for me, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm just very interested in how much $$$ I've saved thanks to you guys!

$40 to $80 an hour depending on what part of the country and what kind of shop you take it to is the going rate for labor. Plus, there will be additional costs on top of that to cover items like shop rags, cleaning, and other overhead costs. Then, there is normal mark-up on the things you buy.

A couple grand easily ...My mom took her ex in for recalls and they told her 1200 for the ball joints because they where up for repair... I did it for 300 buck or something like that but much cheaper..

I had one ball joint done when I took it in to get the front end aligned. The rest were good...for now. I think I paid around $200 w/alignment. I didn't catch it before I took it in, otherwise I would have done it myself. But still, I didn't think that was too bad for a shop...gonna keep my eye on the other 3 though. It drives great now.
Your a good son taking care of your Mom like that!
Cheers!
Scott.
