I just took off my throttle body, and there's loads and loads of black crap in my upper manifold.. it's very close to being liquid, but not quite. I'm currently working on gasket matching an upper and lower intake to put on there, so when i get the new clean intakes on there, i don't want them all piled up with crap. what could be causing this? is there anyway to keep it from building up all this stuff? is the EGR valve screwed up?

Also, about how much are water pumps? i was thinking about replacing mine (I have a few coolant drips from that area) while i'm into this intake swap.

Hey SRV...!!

Where exactly is there buildup? When I did my upper manifold gasket I noticed dark brown gunk on the rockers/lifters. this was due to oil buildup. Is there gunk on the inside of the covers?

BTW--SRV is my apostle!! Do you have any bootlegs to trade? Reply or PM me.

The whole upper intake is coated in about 2 mm of junk. The stuff looks like it has some liquid in it just after the throttle body on the bottom of the upper intake before the first runner. Looks like like oil or something similar.

SRV rocks! No, unfortunately I don't have any bootlegs or anything like that.

The gunk is normal. It's just buildup from over the years. If you clean it, you can increase your truck's performance. Also, the liquid is probably water. Whenever you pass relatively cool air over a hot surface, you naturally get condensation.

hey srv don't worry about the bild up on it like he said you do get condensation on it and it just hangs out there. just wipe it downand it will be obkb!JUST DON"T WIPE OFF OR CLEAN THE THROTLE BODY ASEMBLY IT SELF one of my friends did it degreased and cleaned it in a parts washer and now he has to pull it off and clean it every other month

Thanks to everyone for the input :)

Just to chime in, I took my upper intake manifold off after having the truck for 4.5 years and both the upper and lower manifolds were pretty spotless. No gunk, condensation, no nothing. As for the throttle body, if it gets gunked up you should clean it, but if you use a cleaner you should use one that's safe for the coating that's on the TB bore. Gunk in the TB can cause your throttle to stick which can be annoying, bad for the truck, and/or very dangerous.

Since I had it all of I figured I'd clean the valve covers and upper manifold in a parts cleaner basin. I'm not sure what chemicals it was though. The wingnut bolts on the valve cover broke loose. (they were stuck,so that was a good thing) I also sanded, primed, and re-painted them. Looks Great. I've had no trouble so far but it's only been a month. Be careful with treated/painted parts when cleaning.
BTW--Use Synthetincs and Amsoil when you do the fluids.
