I took off my throttle body today to replace my coolant temperature sensor and discovered that the inside of my upper intake manifold is covered in oil residue. Is this normal? My 94 XLT has 176,000 on it and I know it has a leak in the lower intake manifold gasket. Could this leak cause oil to enter the intake manifold? What could be the cause? The butterfly valve is covered in the inside with oil gum. Any ideas?

I have seen that black varnish buildup with that many miles. A black varnish carbon buildup happens. It can be cleaned off. Now, if you have actual dripping oil in the upper intake manifold, you have bigger problems...

what major problems could those be?!?!

Do you have a automatic trans? If so check the vacuum line from your
modulator valve on the side of the trans. to where it goes into your intake.
If it has oil in it your modulator is bad and letting oil from trans. in your intake.

Yeah, it is an automatic. Where is the vacuum modelator located?

On the right side on the lower trans. neer the o2 sensor on my 92. Check the hose at the intake first to see if it has oil in it. Changing my modulator was a little bit of a job.

THanks for the help! I'll check it out tomorrow
