If by "maintain" you mean "have" it - then yes, the vehicle needs it to contain the fuel vapors until the volume can be fed into the engine.

If by "maintain" you mean "upkeep" it - then no, for the most part, it should be left alone.

i used a fuel hose to join the 2 pipes
