There was a recent wreck near here recently involving a Toyota Scion. The news said that it has a "black box" that they can use to determine what was going on with the car's systems at the time of the accident.

Does anyone know if our EXs have one?

Yes, the owner's manual talks about a Event Data Recorder on page 7 that records information in the event of a crash or near-crash.

We've had them in all cars, for many years.

OBD2 doesn't record accident information like the newer systems. It only records drivetrain faults.

"black boxes" can record many other things such as vehicle speed, steering wheel angle, application of brakes and even if seatbelts were in use. Many argue this information can be provided to insurance companies and they may deny claims if someone were speeding or not wearing their seatbelt.

My understanding is that in Canada and the US it's federally mandated.

Police download the data in all serious Motor Vehicle Incidents

We have also had to supply the data in civil suits as well.
