Howdy. I'm sure its been asked before...

In my '93 Limited with the factory JBL system with CD, but subwoofer sounds like its blown. Sounds like someone is touching the cone while in operation. Since I'm all stock, I guess it happened with age. How do I open the enclosure? I would like to replace it with something from a local shop, for my brother has connections. I want to keep the original look. Would most any sub of the size (6''?) work fine? Thanks.

I replaced mine once with a JL 6" sub. If you push down on the edges of the screen, there is a lip that is holding it in. I probably got ripped off, but it was pretty expensive for the sub, like $80 (not sure if that was actually the price). Sounded better than the factory one, and once you pull out the old one you'll see why. When I got rid of my other X, my dad brought it to a place that yanked it out for 5 bucks and the new one just plugs right in. Or you can go the difficult route and pull a bunch of screws and plastic pins to be able to reach in a unclip the plastic sub panel. The first was it easiest.

hey if it sounds like someone is touching the cone it might not be blown..one of the terminals may be losse OR the connection from the terminal to the cone of the sub may be slapping against the cone

take the sub out and look it over to see if anything is losse

It could be the same problem with mine. The little wire that connects the terminal and the cone has broken off. We tried soldering that little sucker for like 5 times then we just got an MTX 6.5" sub to replace it. Works great ever since. :)
