How many bolts fasten the starter motor of a 1998 Explorer Sport 4.0L SOHC?
Now, you'd think I'd know the answer to this. I've got the factory shop manuals for this model year, as detailed as it gets. Except they've got starter motor information about the 4.0 OHV and the 5.0, but not the SOHC engine. I started with the 4.0 instructions, which call for removing only one bolt. That seemed to be going fine, except then that the starter wouldn't come off.
I think I can see a second bolt, maybe, but that compartment's so crowded I can't see everything, and I'm not even sure that bolt head is part of the starter assembly. I tried to get a ratchet on it, but I can't find a position to torque the handle even one click! The front differential for the 4WD is in the way, it seems. I'm hesitant to start disassembling U-joints if I don't have to.
Am I hallucinating? Anybody here have any tips?
