bought a 92 x and need input

Also keep in mind that the Tach isn't 100% accurate.

Boy that’s for sure my dash one says 1,000 RPMs at idle in Neural and my tune up TAC says 650 to 765. The dash one is just an estimate TAC or to make ya feel good but not one to use for meaningful measurements.

d4 is what i found out that i have for gears!!!!!!!!! guess i will go to 4.11s to see if that helps my mpg a lil. just did fuel filter and old one was pretty bad and nasty. Now it starts up first turn!!
 






4.10's will hurt your fuel economy since your engine will be at a higher RPM at a given speed compared to the existing 3.73's.
 






so stick with the gears i have then? i plan on putting some 31s on it sometime b4 summer.
 






3.73's should be ok with 31's, but the 31's will hurt your mileage. So will 4.10 gears. what the 4.10 gears will help is the acceleration that will get hurt by the 31 inch tires, and keeping everything running at stock rpms.
 






i was getn about 20 mpg average now im get about 15. hopefully the fuel filter will help a bit and new fuel pump. want to upgrade or buy a new coil pack too. anything else i could do to get my miles back up? new plugs too might be in order too.
 






What I found both MPG and for Off roading.

I found when I went to a K & N filter I went up by 2 MPG. Some use the open cone filters and also see some improvement. I did go the 70MM MAF housing, Swiss cheesed air box,and the TB half shaft mod. but it seamed to lower my MPG. Now was it real or was it from being a bit more fun to drive? I do not know but I went back to stock air box and MAF housing and my MPG went back to were it was also. Its now back to about 17.5 MPG hwy. (93 4X4 XLT with Tow package and very few mods any more) I do still think the TB half shaft mod is worth it!

Plugs and wires can do nothing but help if you stay with Motorcraft or at lest Autolights for plugs. Our trucks for some reason just like them and many have had problems with the other ones, not every one, but some including my self. For wires well I like the Motorcraft stock wires and I change then once a year no matter what. Again I have tried others including Accel 8.8 and have had problems with them.

I do have a Accel coil pack on mine but I would not do it again (its the second on in less then 6 years now but I got them for the same cost as a stock one on E bay. that will teach me ). I have never seen or felt any deference from it to the stock coil at all. Now for the best do a search as there is a lot of threads on them here.

In it all I have found my 93 4.0 runs the best and smoothest with all stock parts but the cat back system (mine is custom with a magna flow muffler do not recall what one now and I have only one cat that soon will be changed back to the stock cat system also.)
Accel coil as long as it’s working. a K&N filter. the TB half shaft mod. The rest is stock and has been on and off for my 13 plus years of owner ship. Some things were changed over the years but in the end they went right back to stock. No hard core offroading (rock crawling or mudding) but it has seen its share of dirt and were not talking all forest service roads here. Many hunting trips for elk and marshes for ducks when I lived in Idaho. Lots of snow and mud with some desert also. Towed my boat on HWYs and dirt paths and some launch ramps that were nothing but two tire tracks in the mud. (Boat was a 16’ glastron 100 horse out board) never found more then stock much of a need as long as I drove it right and did not try to over drive the truck. Thats not to say one can not inprove on it at all just that it works as is and works well.

just today i did a coolant flush and so far it workn at no and go to the rm now. so im happy with it. im goin to do a new fuel pump with new spark plugs and a cai too.
