I bought my truck back in june. This guy is a small dealer with about 5 cars in some small shop in a stip mall. I have never bought from a dealer so what happened was he had me sign some papers to change the title and then he said it would come in the mail. So 3 months roll around and I see that there is no title so I call him and he says sometimes it takes this long. Then october comes around and I need tabs in november so I see if maybe there was some mistake with the dmv and there wasn't and it was still in his name. So I call him and tell him that the dmv says it is still in his name and he says he will look into it. Later he calls me and says he is so sorry he had one of his friends go to the dmv and do the title change and he did the wrong truck so he got me the tabs and said that he changed the title. Yesterday I got pulled over for snow being over my liscence plate and after running my plates he says that it is still in someone elses name! What is this guy trying to pull! Anyone have any ideas what I can do? This guy is from africa and I think maybe he plans on leaving here leaving me out of luck. I am also going to call the dmv right now to see what they say before I call him.

Where is his dmv paperwork? What did he provide you with?

I have a copy of the title that came with the tabs. The title has the name of the previous owner the transfer ownership part is completed on the bottom.

I didn't get anything from him when I bought it.

If he's not going to the dmv there's a problem. You should print out the transfer of title form at your dmv's website, but go to the dmv and show them what the seller provided to you. You want to make sure it's all legit. The dmv has enforcement, or they might ask you to involve the pd. Calling the dmv is okay, but you need to show them the paperwork you have.

Ok thanks. If you have any other helpful information please let me know.

What could he be trying to do by not transfering it?

A number of things...

You shouldn't approach him again unless the dmv advises, but don't go alone if they do.

Ok I just looked again at the copy of the title and it doesn't have his name at the bottom of the title it has the last owner which is some other dealership. The keychain that came with my keys also has the name of that dealership. here is a picture of it.

My cousin had something similar happen, but the dealer sold him the car without having the title in his possession, it was a large dealer, new and used cars. The car was used, but barely. 3 months roll around and no tags or anything. Turns out the previous owner died, holder of the estate sold the car, but apparently wasn't supposed to. The family wanted the car back. My cousin had to give his car back. Was such a nice car, Chrysler 300 C, hemi.. loaded. Ended up threatening the guy with a lawyer, even contacted a few to find out the correct course of action. Basically the 3 months he paid on the car went towards a down payment on a new car. Ended up getting a Jeep GC Limited 3.0 CRD. I would definitely look into a lawyer. Get some advice from him. I would keep pushing the guy asking to go to the DMV with him and watch the title transfer, make sure you have a few witnesses as well. Good luck!

You need to go to the dmv

This one could be slow paperwork on his part, but before anything goes wrong, like someone claiming they never transferred ownership to him, you should call the dmv, let them hear this, and go from there - but get the snow off your plates, and get to the dmv :D

(and you should snag that link down too)

He should avoid contact with that seller at all costs... let the dmv advise him first. :)

You got a plan?

Don't wait too long, he might not be there for long. It's possible he's a third-party seller for the company on that paperwork. But it's also possible he's just not going to do anything. You okay there?

ok thanks.

I called him and he told me that he did do it. I want to believe something must have went wrong by how the conversation went. I even could hear his kids in the background so I really don't think that it could be a problem. He told me that he did do the transfer and that the cop might just have not checked on the title well enough. I have not had time to go to the dmv but I am going to on monday or tuesday and if it isn't changed I am going to call him and arange a time for him and me to go there and do a forced title change on it if necessary.

If the purchase was made in the city of Minnetonka, you can call the local pd today and they will help you - they will resolve this.
