Box Suggestions

Ok, I am making a box in the rear of my explorer, and once I sell my current box and sub to buy a 12", maybe 2 12"s. But, I would like to have the sub(s) facing the rear, but would like to have some sort of grille or something that can be removed if necessary. I was wondering if I could cut out 13" holes, then get a ring like this: Dead Link Removed mount the sub(s)to those rings, then put those into that 13" hole, so that the sub will be mounted flush then I could make a grille for it. Does that sound good? I may just take this box to a local car audio place so that they can finish it off to get the volumes correct and everything. That way it will sound good. Also, any other suggestions will be taken into consideration.

I'm eventually going to have a custom box made for my 3 12's. I already have that JL custom box holding 3 JL 12's but it takes up my whole cargo area. The box that i was looking at having made would have the 3 12's facing the back of the seats. That would project the sound, while the bass would hit off the back wall of the truck. The front of the box would have a slant to it. Basically a large sealed truck box. I like the sound of sealed boxes over the ported.

I would just take it to a shop because they will probably charge around $100 maybe a little more and it will save you a lot of grief and stuff. The box should also be made to fit the sub and made out of MDF. Also if something goes wrong, a good shop will have a warantee on their work so if something goes wrong they will fix it for you for free. WHat kind of box are you building now?

Thats exactly what I was thinking 4wheelin. the box I am making is the 2nd picture I put in my post. I may just take them what I have right now, and have them finish it off. I only have the bottom and the 2 "walls" but it holds very well. I could probably do the vinyl wrapping that I want, but just have them get the dimensions right, and do all the cutting, and like you said, it'll save me a lot of grief. But, about the box, if I just go with one sub, I will probably just make the other section of the box a storage compartment for tow straps, jackets, tools, extra fluids, etc. But that compartment will have a lid that locks, so I could always have them design that in there as well. I wanted to make something like this out of fiberglass, but it just seemed too hard for me to do, and I tried asking someone on this board about it, and he just stopped contacting me so I figured he wasn't going to do it. I really wish I knew how to work with that stuff. I may try asking my friend's dad if he could help me with it because he has the stuff and the knowledge on how to do it. I think the only tricky part of making it out of fiberglass would be the walls on it, maybe not the one against the rear seat, but the one facing out the back would be hard to get up. I will look into the fiberglass making process a little, and may buy a video on it to see how it is done and all.

the place that i go to wants around 300 to do a custom box for me. Thats with the box holding 3 12's and having a place for my amps to sit flush with the box.

If you've ever messed around with your home speakers, you'll notice that there are some small plastic connectors that can connect the black speaker cloth overlay to the cabinet. They sell these things, and you could make something similar. How about just mounting the subs normally, then adding an extra quarter inch layer of wood around it, but on this layer puttin on the black speaker grill cloth? You'll get the flush look and a sleek black speaker cloth finish to match.

Thats a good idea. Thanks. I could just get some cheap 1/4" plywood or something, then I could cut a hole for the sub, and put some speaker grille over than hole, then cover the rest of the sheet of plywood with vinyl. Or I could cut a 13" hole in the particle board that I have now. Then cut out a 15x15" square, then in the middle of that cut out a hole for the sub. Then put some liquid nails on the square peice and place that peice in the middle of the 13" circle then mount the sub, and put the grille cloth and vinyl on the same way as described above.
