I’m sure over short distances you can eek out a decent MPG, in very specific circumstances.
Over a period of 10 full tankfuls of regular driving what percentage of increase are you hoping for?
Well my plans are to mainly use the Explorer on what I named her, "Day Tripper" trips in and around Phoenix AZ, trips where the idea is to get home to sleep in our beds.
I am also building a 93 Chevy Van with a special low RPM 383 going into a 4L80e transmission to a US Gear Overdrive as well, that is out "Over Nighter" as it is a mini RV or as they now call them "Adventure Vans" with a a b full size queen bed and potty.
I really think you have your first sentence backwards, long runs on freeways is where I expect to see the most gains just running at speed. MPG always really add up with these kind of trips, running around town will only help if the runs are on the freeways and as they will be short I only expect small gains IF I in-gauge the overdrive.
One extra feature is in hill climbing I can if needed down shift to say 4th and run the overdrive giving me a 4th and 1/2 a gearing in-between 4th and 5th, or run in 5rh +`1/2 as with a second overdrive transmission I can do gear splitting.
Here is a sample:
In my case I can hold a 5R55s in forth ...but you can get the idea.
So in a way I now have a 10 speed.
The van will only have 8 speeds, BUT thanks to the heavy duty transmission and Overdrive I CAN tow a small to medium trailer, like a camper or a car trailer to being home a car. Towing will most likely be in 4L80s third gear overdrive. So still saving some MPG over towing with out the OD gear.
