Budget-minded mods for 99 5spd Sport

I currently drive a 4 dr XLS, but I'm seriously looking at trading for/buying a 99 2wd 5spd sport at a local dealership to mod. I still have one year of college left, but I want to start saving up to beef up the performance of the little X. What are some recommendations for the intake, exhaust, etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

K&N Intake

I just put in a new K&N cold air intake. Cost $230 for the whole kit. It looks and sounds cool and supposedly give about 6.5 hp. I think you can replace just the airbox with a K&N cone for cheaper.

Yeah, my pops has got a K&N intake and Flowmasters on his 98 Expedition, it sounds really nice!

You'll get a different sound with the V6. Still sounds nice though. Intake and Exhaust are the first things to do. A chip is really a waste with a manual because it mostly deals with tranny shift points and such.
