I just got an amp installed for my two 12s last night. On the way home everything was fine, but when I played it today, it smelt like something was buring. The buring smell is coming out of my box. The Amp is an Orion 200.2 and is pushing two Kenwood 12s. I just purchased the amp last night and were installed by the guys at Sound Advice. The box and the 12s were given to me by my brother. He had the 12s in his Rodeo for over a year without any problems. The speakers had been sitting in our garage for a month. Is the burning smell coming from some crap getting melted that got in the box while it was in the garage or is the amp burning my speakers up?

Could very well be your voice coils frying. You subs could be trash. Not much you can do with out taking the subs out and looking at the back of them.

yeah, you are cooking your subs.
if it doesnt burn too much, they migh be fine when they cool and the glue hardens again. but if you cook them too much, they will be destroyed. that amp is way too much power for them.

The guys at Sound Advice said these would be good for my subs. My brother had more power on them then I did, and he never had a problem...Should I go back to Sound Advice and return my amp for one that has less power?

what model are the kenwood 12s?
i was just saying it was too much power because that is why the voice coils are melting. maybe the subs are just old and cant handle what the used to. remember that the Orion amps are underrated at 12 volts, so it is really putting out more power than it says.

I'm not sure what model they are, because my brother gave them to me. They are blue, and the middle has a red M in the middle of it slanting towards right. I also now they are 4 ohms

ok, those subs are meant to handle 160 watts rms.
did you say you have the Orion Cobalt 200.4?
if so, then you are putting way too much power to those subs.

Yeah, the amp is the Orion Cobalt 200.4 It's what the guy at Sound Advice recommended. So I should take this back and get something with less power? Do you have any recommendations? I had the subs on about 15 minutes today, have I already done to my subs? If I have, shouldnt I take it up with the guys at Sound Advice for them putting too much power?

well once the voice coil starts to melt, it is never the same. the subs might still work fine, but they might not hit as hard. i dont know their policy or liability, but that was some really bad judgement on their part.

Orions are also way way underrated. Way too much power to those subs.
