2003 Explorer
Hello everyone,

I am looking to buy a 2003 Ford Explorer.
It has 171,000 miles.

The guy says I have to replace one of the front wheel bearings (I already found the relevant thread here: How I changed my 05's Front Wheel Bearing)

The other thing, he says the Over Drive light comes ON randomly.
Yet that the transmission works perfectly.
I am going to inspect the vehicle today in the afternoon.
Can you give me some pointers as to what to look for?

I do all my mechanical work, so I have no problems getting down and dirty with her, or with the repairs.

Yet, obviously, you have more experience in what I should look for.

Thank you very much!

How much is he listing it for? What engine size? Is he the first owner?

He's listing it for $3,800 if I'm not mistaken.
The engine size, will verify later today and report back.

As to first owner, I don't know.
I don't think so, because he did not told me so.
And you know that is a selling point (so sellers would mention it if they were).

I will go look at her later today, and post up what I find.

Thanks!

OD light on means that the transmission is on its way out. You might consider the cost of replacing the transmission to the purchase price.

Check the rear diff for whine, rear wheel hubs, broken coil spring.
Check if AC/Blower works.

I wouldn't pay more than $1000 if you have any of those problems.

Could be your chance to get a good deal if the problem is like that of the post below.
Either way, I'd want the car at 150,000 or less miles. I'd assume that at 170+ miles, with the OD light on, not knowing its history, that you could be in for engine and tranny problems. To me, miles are too high. How long would you plan on keeping it? That'll determine how much you want to put in it.
I keep mine until they don't look nice on the outside anymore. I don't like car payments and high insurance.
