ok, ive decided to hook up a duel exhaust to my X. i have decided to go with Flowmaster 40 series (2), and having the pipes made at a muffler shop that i know.

my question is should i go with delta or non delta, which is louder?

and, the 40 series are damn loud, right?

thanks folks! :bounce:

Non Delta, the original 40, is louder than the Delta series. The Delta series does quiet some of the interior resonance that the original 40 is famous for. It all depends on what you're after.

As far as the original 40 series being damn loud, well, that's always a matter of perception. On a basically stock Explorer 5.0 motor, with cats in place, I don't think it's going to be too loud. You're putting the Flows on to sound aggressive, arn't you? I've got a orignal 40 on my 4.0 V6, and it just produces a nice rumble, not anything objectionable. With duals and a V8, sure it'll be louder, but not too much, I don't think.

The nice thing about mufflers is that if you run them awhile and simply don't like them, change to something else. Mufflers arn't very expensive, the original Flow 40's should be able to be bought for about $60-70 each, so don't really have a big investment to worry about.

It really all depends what you're looking for. The Delta's are more expensive also.

yeh the non-deltas are much louder. but if you are going to have 2 of them with your cats its not going to be that loud. if you want it to be loud get the muffler shor to put the mufflers right by your rear wheel. then just have the exhuast dump right out of the mufflers. no tail pipes. and since its by the rear wheel its far enough back to still have your backpressure. just my $.02

I have the same setup, 2 non delta 40 Flowmasters with 3 1/2" chrome tips. Its not too loud, but it does sound great. I gained some horsepower, torque and gas mileage. At the same time, I cut my airbox, and with those mods, I gained 2mpg on a hwy trip. I have some exhaust pics in a link in my sig, check it out.

RTStork,
How much did you pay for your exhaust setup and where did you buy it from? Did you have to get someone to bend pipes for you?

I bought 2 single in/single out mufflers from Summit for $60ea, then had a local muffler shop weld them in and install some 2 1/2" pipes with 3 1/2" chrome tips. The pipes and welding cost $100 and the tips were $30, so total was $250. Its the best way to go really. Pick a muffler you like, buy it and take it to a muffler shop.
