after I get my engine work done, hopefully I'll be looking at about 300 or so horses at the flywheel. I don't think my little old a4ld will like that too much, though....so I'm looking at either doing a hi po rebuild for my current tranny, or doing a c-4 swap. Doug0904 recommends the supercomp c-4 from performance automatics on his site.....I have two concerns with it though. One...since it is only a 3 speed....I don't know how great it's going to be on highway trips being that I have 3.73 gears and I'd like to do a few more things than just drag race my explorer. Another concern is....with that tranny, will I have to give up my 4wd? I don't go wheeling a lot but I'd like to keep it if I could. I'm not exactly what you would call a transmission expert, so if anybody has any good info for me based on my situation I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

James

They made C-4 4x4's so I imagine you could keep the 4wd. I'm not sure if the t-case bolt pattern would be the same. I'd much rather have a c-4 than an a4ld. What about a c-6? I believe they make add-on overdrive units for the c-3/4.

I was going o post something about thisa but now i see there is one started. What kind of adapters do you8 need to run the c4? I am 4wd but i am taking it out and going to 2wd. Other than the c4 tranny and driveshaft what will i need? Sorry to bump into your thread MaximumViolence

Get ahold of CoryL from CRLCustoms. He put a C4 on his, but i'm not sure if he used the tcase for the explorer.

The C4 bolts right up and takes the automatic A4LD starter i believe.

What's the difference in a C4 and a C5?

700R4 is the only real choice

AA put together adapters to mate the 700r4 into the ex.
The adapters arent cheap but I priced a built 700r at 12-1400 plus 600 in adapters, and 100 misc costs comes out close to what a A4LD costs to rebuild with hard parts. Should be a bit more reliable than a rebuilt A4LD too, and handle all the power a 4.0 can put to it.

The 700 has a low first gear and an overdrive gear - check the threads for more information. I think the 700 is your only real choice if you want an OD- otherwise the C4.

According to conversations I have had with CoryL you basically need to put a C5 bellhousing on it which will mate up with the Engine but the rear output needs to be a C4 to mate up with a BW t-case.

So the BW will work on the back of a C4?

Well according to CoryL it will and I trust him, don't you?

Last I checked, Cory was running a c5 to atlas II. I've got a C4 in the garage and you can mate a d20. D20 is gear driven, and can be made into a twin stick. I think it's around 2.46:1 ratio. I could be off on that though. C5s are almost identical to C4s internally. As for highway speeds, I have no clue what your RPMs will be.

No. A c5 will bolt up to a 4.0L and a BW t-case. If you want to run a c4, then you need to use the c5 bellhousing, torque converter, and flex plate. The c4 will require a different transfer case, like Pete mentioned. The c5 is basically the same as a c4, with a couple of minors upgrades. It is much easier to find a performance c4 than it is to find a performance c5.

Hmmm well then I got it mixed up. I went to check my notes and this is what CoryL told me.

To run a C4 on 4.0L it will have to have a C5 Bellhousing if you want to run a BW t-case then you also need the C5 rear tailshaft housing, but if you want to run a D20 then you need a C4 housing in the rear.

I should have gone to my notes first B4 spouting off.

Especially since I just bought a C4 and D20 for my Ex....Shhhh. I might have to do some research on twin sticking it.

There are absolutly no differences in the C4 and C5 bellhousing patterns on the 4.0. The only difference that I can even think of is the case on the two. Some C4's and C5's used what is commonly refered to as a truck case, this meant that the bellhousing bolted to the outside of the case seperatly from the pump. Then on most C4's the bellhousing and front pump share the bellhousing bolts to hold them to the case. The 4.0 C4 bellhousing will work on either case, I know I've used both. There is only one C4 bellhousing that will work for the 4.0, it came in the 74-78 Mustang 2's and in one yaer bronco 2 1984. Which one do you think would be easier to find??

Ohh and if anyone needs some, I have two with the right flywheels.

Later Doug904.:)

Oh yea, yea, yea ..... me me me. I could use one but won't be dong this until much later I have a seperate project to work on first.
