Hi All,
About a year or so ago - probably more - my ABS/Traction Control light came on and then the little wrench appeared on the display. I read that it was likely an ABS tone ring and that if I held the traction control button for 10 seconds before starting, the car would throw the code after a few brief moments of moving and turn the traction control off. Or something like that. So I figured I’ve just been driving without the TCS. No biggie. But apparently that also means I’ve been driving without ABS too. Didn’t know that…
So I’m going to bite the bullet and get the tone ring replaced for something like $300 or whatever I’m forced to fork over. I ran Torque Pro to see if I could pinpoint the exact axle. But the code found – C1236 – points to a “Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Input Missing”. From everything I’ve found online, (http://www.autocodes.com/c1236_ford.html), it sounds like it might be a simple connector I need to replace. Though I have no idea what I’m doing on that front, I’ll take that alternative to the tone ring issue. But I’m curious to know if there’s a way I can verify it’s the speed sensor without being out that money in case it turns out to be the tone ring(s) after all? And silly question: but is “Left Rear” the driver’s side back wheel?
Oh, and forgot to mention, I put the “ABS Speed Sensor” dials on Torque. I continued watching how all 4 dials would read 30mph or whatever and for a brief second, “Wheel 3” would say 2mph or something and then jump back in line. Happened pretty consistently. And most concerning is the noise/vibration when I travel at high speeds. I was told it could be a bad wheel hub, but no codes for that. Could be another issue lingering in the background. No vibration or anything, but noticeably around 50+mph. I was wondering if this sort of issue with the tone ring or speed sensor would lend itself to those sort of symptoms.
Any insight is greatly appreciated!
