I did a search on this topic but did not get any hits.

I need to install new brake pads on my 02 XLT 4x4 w/ heavy duty towing package. The parts list say pads for single cylinder calipers and two cylinder calipers are available.

How do I figure out which calipers I have?

Thanks!

You can usually tell by the shape of the caliper, there will be 2 round bulges on a 2 piston caliper and one round bulge on a single piston caliper. Or, you could unbolt a caloiper and remove the pads and see whether there are one or 2 pistons. My 2002 XLT has 2 piston calipers in the front and single piston in the rear, I'm pretty sure that this was the only setup that came on 2002-2005 explorers.

AFAIk, the '02 will have dual-piston calipers on the front. I could be mistaken though, so don't quote me on that.

I'll find out tonight when I change the pads. I bought the dual piston pads, so we will see.

I believe they're dual in the front, single in the back

Yep, mine are dual front, and single rear.

Changed our brakes today.. dual front, single rear.

I think yours will be single piston since yours is a second generation.

Is the caliper leaking fluid or something? Cauz calipers are typically under $50 (after the core charge) so it might not be worth your time to rebuild the thing.
